San hunter-gatherers are considered the first inhabitants of southern Africa. They were traditionally semi-nomadic, moving seasonally within certain defined areas based on the availability of resources such as water, game animals and edible plants. In their iconography, paintings of rhinos were scattered across the drylands pointing to the next waterhole on the way.
